IMPORTANT: New FDNY Requirements

Updated: Jan 29, 2019

The New York City Fire Department has implemented new regulations in regards to your portable fire extinguishers. Here's what you need to know.

What The Law Was Until Now

Until October of 2018, portable fire extinguishers (PFE'S) were required to be inspected and serviced by a licensed professional minimum once a year, depending on the circumstances. At A-1 Fire Control, safety and compliance is our number one priority, therefore, we are always there to make sure all your extinguishers are inspected, up to code, and safe to use in case of emergency.

What Changed?

As of October 2018, the FDNY has changed and updated the requirements of when and how portable fire extinguishers need to be serviced and inspected.

Besides the annual inspections done by an approved servicing company, there needs to be a monthly check up on each fire extinguisher.

What You Need To Do

As the law requires a licensed company to service the Fire Extinguisher annually, it specifically states that you, the occupant, do a monthly inspection called a Quick Check. A Quick Check consists of making sure that the pin and seal are in place, the gauge is in the green, and there’s nothing obstructing the extinguisher. You will need to write the date of inspection and sign your initials in the back of the approved tag.

Although the law has already taken effect in October, the FDNY is now starting to do detailed inspections. We’ve been informed that the FDNY is writing violations for “failure to inspect fire extinguishers on a monthly basis”. Companies that fail to comply with this new regulation can face fines for each fire extinguisher separately.
